EARTH DAY CELEBRATION

Description: Join the Friends of Birch State Park for the park’s Earth Day Celebration, April 17. There will be earth-friendly vendors, facepainting for the kids, a community ecological mural, Native American storytelling, guided nature walks, special presentations on responsible pet ownership, and sea turtle conservation, as well as a shorebird release by the Wildlife Care Center. The day’s activities end with a drum circle from 3:00-6:30 p.m.

*NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION WEEK
Rainbow Springs State Park
Date: April 14th, 2010. All day event.
Description: Rainbow Springs State Park will celebrate National Environmental Education Week. On Wednesday, April 14th a Ranger Guided Canoe Tour will be led down the beautiful Rainbow River and launch time is 10:00 a.m. This tour will be followed by a live bird presentation around 11:30 a.m. H.O.P.E. Wildlife will be featuring species like the red shoulder hawk, red tailed hawk, peregrine falcon, screech owl, and barred owl. Learn about some of the similarities and differences between these birds and how they fit into Florida’s environment. You can also visit H.O.P.E. Wildlife Rehabilitation for more info.

Falling Waters State Park

Description: The Department of Environmental Protection’s Falling Waters State Park and The Friends of Falling Waters, Inc. annual ‘Legends and Lore’ even exploring the life and history of Falling Waters and the surrounding area through historic demonstrations of various crafts and equipment. 9:00 a.m. thru 3:00 p.m. - Friday, April 16th & 9:00 a.m. thru 6:00 p.m. - Saturday, April 17th

Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach
Date: 10:00 a.m., April 16, 2010 - Stroll along the beach and learn about significant features of beach habitat, the history of the terrain, the natural communities and ongoing activities that occurs on the beach. Discover native wildlife and learn about the importance of the vegetation along the coast. Examine different types of shells and discover the value of seaweed.

15th Annual Earth Day Celebration
Hear local musicians. The local Moose Lodge, from Big Pine Key, will be cooking up hot dogs, sloppy Joes and fixin’s for the event. Admission to the park is free (come early, parking is limited).Activities include: face painting, a puppet show, fish printing and a sand sculpture contest.The Save-a-Turtle organization will co-host the event, and have several activities and displays. They will be selling raffle tickets to raise money for sea turtle research. See environmental exhibits and booths, marine life touch tanks and join children’s activities. The Florida Keys Astronomy Club will set up telescopes with a special lens for viewing the sun.
